A tenugui is a thin Japanese hand towel made from cotton, according to Wikipedia.
In the past it was daily used as a wiper.
It also has been used to cover people’s heads like a cap to prevent heatstroke as well as stop sweating.
It is useful at public bath house because they are handier than a towel.
It has been also used as advertisement or to impress someone’s name.
Not only the individuals, but shops and companies give out it with their names and logos on at special occasions, such as New Year’s days and anniversaries.
Now, the towel is widely used as a wiper.
And the tenugui has become a kind of fashion item to find a use for not only a wiper but a gift or a wrapper. It can be used as a room partition, a sofa cover, and sometimes remade for a face mask, bag, clothes and so on.
When I take a dance lesson I bring my favorite tenugui. It absorbs the sweat well and, when I feel a little cold, I wrap my neck with it.
A friend of mine, who lost her hair when she got illness, said she used it to cover her head. She looked so fashionable that no one thought she had only short hair.
The tenugui can be used variously.
I hope you seek another usage of tenugui.
