Auntie Mee's Tea Time

Have a cup of tea over my story.

5. Have A Cup Of Japanese Tea

The number of people who have been found to have THAT virus is rapidly increasing also in Japan.

So, this time let’s enjoy teatime together at home.

Japanese green tea has now become popular around the world.

I have experienced flavoured green tea when I went to European countries.

People outside Japan seem to think that Japanese tea is green.

However, when you have α cup of tea at restaurants or homes in Japan you will find it yellow-coloured.

In fact, green is the color of matcha, powdered Japanese tea.

It is finely ground tea leaves and used in special occasions such as tea ceremonies, or recently in sweets.

Matcha tastes a little bitter and matches Japanese sweets.

Besides these kinds of tea, there are various kinds of tea in Japan.

This is hoji-cha, which is made by roasting the green tea leaves.

While roasting, tannin and caffeine contained by the tea leaves change to other substances. That is because hoji-cha is less stimulative compared with other kinds of tea.

Hoji-cha is often filled in thermos bottles to go picnic or to be served in public space.

Further, we have kuki-cha, which contains mostly the stalk of tea tree, and genmai-cha, tea mixed with roasted brown rice, and the like.

We also have iced tea for hot and sultry days. You can get pet bottled ones but I prefer to make it by myself.

By the way, do you know that green tea and Western black tea is made from same plant, Camellia sinensis?

What makes them different is only the processing of the leaves. For making black tea the leaves are fermented, while for green tea they are kneaded and steamed.

So we have “Japanese black tea” as well.

Japanese black tea tastes sweet, less bitter and milder compared with western ones.

After the pandemic is over, why don’t you have a cup of tea in Japan?
